Vermail is committed to using resources responsibly and to reducing the environmental impact associated with its services and infrastructure.

Sustainability considerations form part of our decision-making process across different areas of our operations, from the way energy is sourced to the management of hardware and the broader supply chain.

By making use of renewable energy, we aim to reduce the CO₂ emissions associated with our infrastructure. At the same time, we continually seek opportunities to improve the efficiency of the data centers supporting our services.

New server infrastructure is selected with energy efficiency in mind, while hardware that reaches the end of its operational life is recycled or disposed of through appropriate channels.

Minimizing CO₂

Renewable Energy Wherever Possible

Reducing CO₂ emissions is an important part of our approach to limiting our environmental impact and contributing to efforts against climate change.

Wherever possible, Vermail relies on electricity generated from renewable sources.

In Sweden, 100% of the electricity used by our data centers comes from renewable energy sources.

ISO 50001

ISO-Certified Energy Management

The data centers used to provide our services operate energy-management systems certified according to ISO 50001.

This internationally recognized standard provides a framework for monitoring, managing and continuously improving energy performance.

During 2024, the responsible recycling of decommissioned hardware contributed to a reduction of approximately 1,497 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

Reducing Our Energy Demand

Using sustainable sources of electricity is only one aspect of reducing environmental impact. Limiting the amount of energy required to operate our infrastructure is equally important.

We therefore regularly modernize and optimize data-center infrastructure with the objective of reducing unnecessary energy losses during operation.

Improvements to IT architecture, including virtualization and container-based clusters, enable computing resources to be used more efficiently. This allows us to increase the value delivered to users while limiting the additional environmental impact of our infrastructure.

Efficient Hardware and Software

The data centers supporting Vermail services use modern, energy-efficient hardware wherever possible.

Energy-efficient processors are designed to provide the required computing performance while generating less unnecessary heat. Lower heat output can, in turn, reduce the amount of energy required for cooling.

The Vermail web-hosting infrastructure is based on Linux.

Using a Linux-based environment allows computing resources to be managed efficiently even under substantial workloads and can help reduce the total number of physical servers required.

Virtualization further allows workloads that would previously have required individual dedicated servers to be consolidated onto cloud infrastructure.

Container technologies provide an additional level of efficiency by allowing multiple services to share underlying operating-system resources rather than unnecessarily duplicating complete operating environments.

Intelligent Cooling

Cooling systems represent a significant part of the electricity consumed by a data center in addition to the servers themselves.

For this reason, improving cooling efficiency and identifying more intelligent methods for controlling data-center temperatures remain important elements of our infrastructure strategy.

Recycling

Reducing Our Environmental Footprint

96.6 metric tons of hardware recycled during 2024

Once servers and other hardware reach the end of their useful operational life, they are removed from service and responsibly recycled or disposed of through appropriate processes.

During 2024, as part of United Internet AG, approximately 96.6 metric tons of hardware were recycled.

This recycling activity resulted in an estimated reduction of more than 1,497 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

Environmental responsibility also extends to everyday workplace practices. Employees are encouraged to separate recyclable materials and dispose of waste through the appropriate recycling streams.

Business Travel

More Environmentally Responsible Travel

Our energy-efficient offices are equipped with modern digital communication tools, including instant messaging and video-conferencing systems.

These technologies enable employees and teams located in different countries or regions to work together effectively without requiring unnecessary travel.

When physical travel is necessary, rail transport is preferred wherever reasonably practical.

Vermail employees are also encouraged to share journeys or make use of alternative means of transportation that reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition, we seek to maintain our company vehicle fleet using modern solutions that take both environmental efficiency and economic sustainability into consideration.
